It\u2019s pretty safe to say that we all have probably imagined what it would be like to lay on a cloud, or what a cloud might feel like. Is it puffy like a pillow? Is it as soft as cotton? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans are inquisitive creatures, especially when it comes to looking up in the sky. Just like the stars, the moon, and planets \u2013 clouds keep our curiosities going. It\u2019s the intangible wonder that drives us to want the chance to experience this wonder up close and personal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With your skydive on the horizon, maybe you\u2019re hoping to finally get the chance to touch<\/em> a cloud!!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

So, can you skydive if it\u2019s cloudy? Let\u2019s cover<\/em> all things cloudy, how clouds impact your jump, and other skydiving weather conditions<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SKYDIVING WEATHER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The three main weather factors that can impact your skydive are: wind, rain, <\/strong>and clouds<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dangerous wind gusts can impact the steerability of the canopy making it hard to perform a safe landing<\/a>, while rain<\/a> and clouds can impact visibility for the skydiver. We need to be able to see where we’re going in order to have an accurate landing and to have a full view of our surroundings while in the sky. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For safety reasons, skydiving only takes place when weather conditions are just right \u2013 blue skies with winds around 5 mph is what we want to see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IF IT\u2019S CLOUDY ON THE DAY OF MY SKYDIVE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If clouds roll in, we will go on a weather hold until things start to clear up. This is usually determined by the pilot or the Safety & Training Advisor (S&TA). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clouds move and can sometimes appear out of nowhere. There\u2019s a chance that the skies could be clear to skydive, you board the plane and all of a sudden clouds start building around you. In this case, the pilot is responsible for assessing the clouds to determine if they should just ride back to the ground or if you\u2019re good to go.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n

If your skydive weather<\/a> forecast is looking less than favorable, we will simply reschedule<\/a> your jump at your convenience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In some cases, we have the option of waiting out the bad weather if the forecast is looking promising. So keep your hopes up \u2013 clouds move and winds calm down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SKYDIVING THROUGH CLOUDS IS ILLEGAL!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Despite the allure of skydiving through a cloud,\u00a0 it’s not only dangerous, it\u2019s actually illegal<\/a> per the Federal Aviation Administration<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Federal Aviation Regulation Part 105.17<\/a>: \u201cNo person may conduct a parachute operation, and no pilot in command of an aircraft may allow a parachute operation to be conducted from that aircraft –<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Into or through a cloud, or<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. When the flight visibility or the distance from any cloud is less than that prescribed\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    HOW HIGH DO CLOUDS NEED TO BE TO SKYDIVE?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    To keep things simple, we usually say that we just \u201cneed to be able to see the ground from the plane.\u201d Here, the FAA provides a detailed table of the flight visibility and clearance from cloud requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Altitude<\/strong><\/td>Flight visibility (statute miles)<\/strong><\/td>Distance from clouds<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
    1,200 feet or less above the surface regardless of MSL altitude<\/td>3<\/td>500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal.<\/td><\/tr>
    More than 1,200 feet above the surface but less than 10,000 feet MSL<\/td>3<\/td>500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal.<\/td><\/tr>
    More than 1,200 feet above the surface and at or above 10,000 feet MSL<\/td>5<\/td>1,000 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 1 mile horizontal. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    This doesn\u2019t completely crush your dreams of seeing a cloud up-close \u2013 we can still skydive below<\/em> clouds and sometimes even in between clouds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pilots and the S&TA will work together to check the weather forecasts with the automated weather observation system (AWOS) and also by using their eyes to determine the altitude and if the clouds look like they\u2019re moving or building in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU SKYDIVE THROUGH A CLOUD?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Entering a thick cloud can be extremely dangerous<\/a>, especially if you have no idea how deep the cloud is or what is on the other side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pulling your parachute inside of a cloud is a big no-no because skydivers falling above you won\u2019t be able to see you deploy, and you risk having a mid-air collision. It is best to wait until everyone has exited the cloud before deploying your parachute. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You can see how being inside of a cloud at the time you needed to deploy your parachute would be stressful! Skydiving through a cloud can be quite a frightening experience and honestly, not all that exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n

    Don\u2019t get us wrong, getting a view of puffy white clouds against the blue sky in the distance is a fantastic sight to see \u2013 a real treat! However, skydiving through<\/em> a cloud isn\u2019t actually as glorious as one might expect. It\u2019s gray, foggy, and misty! If you\u2019ve ever gone through fog, it\u2019s exactly like that \u2013 so, rest assured that you\u2019re not missing out on anything. Don\u2019t let that stop your imagination though!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    While you might not be on an actual cloud, you will be on cloud nine<\/em> once you achieve your dreams<\/a> of flying through the sky.
